In 1905, Hans Wildsorf, the founder of Rolex, was 24 years old and living in London when he founded a company specializing in the distribution of timepieces. Although he was born in Germany, in his earlier life he lived in Switzerland and in his early twenties he moved to England and worked in the watchmaking industry, training and closely studying the trade. When he began running his own business, he had a vision of producing an elite and elegant wrist watch that was also precise and reliable. While few wristwatches existed at this time, they were not very precise and worn more for fashion. In fact, at that time, most men still wore large pocket watches and considered “wristlet” watches (as they were then called) to be slightly effeminate.

Hans Wildsorf set out to make wristwatches that were refined, masculine and fashionable. In 1909, the Hans Wildsof’s vision became a reality and the Rolex watch was born. He wanted to convince the public of the reliability of these innovative timepieces, so he equipped them with small, very precise movements manufactured by a Swiss watchmaking company in Bienne. He came up with the name Rolex because he wanted a name that was short and easy to pronounce and easily remembered in any language. He also felt that that the short name looked aesthetically pleasing on watch faces and dials.

In 1919, Rolex opened an office in Geneva and soon after Switzerland became the headquarters of the company. In 1931, Rolex invented and patented the world’s first self-winding mechanism with a perpetual rotor. This ingenious system, a true work of art, is today at the heart of every modern automatic watch.  Over the years the company continued to grow in products, innovation and ideas and became one of the most well-known and successful watch brands in the world. Rolex watches are crafted from the finest raw materials and assembled with scrupulous attention to detail. They have remained a leader in the luxury watch industry throughout the years.

Today, the Rolex name remains synonymous with words like elite, distinctive, classic and exclusive. These watches are the result of true craftsmanship; they are designed, developed and produced to meet or exceed the most exacting standards.
